The bio-based industries' contribution to a climate-neutral Europe by 2050

In this horizontal paper, BIC outlines the contribution of the bio-based industries towards achieving a climate-neutral Europe. BIC welcomes that the European Green Deal puts the reduction of fossil emissions as a key priority and aims to achieve climate-neutrality by 2050. We support the ambitious EU target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030.

A carbon neutrality pathway will require that private sector investments and innovations are sufficiently incentivised. In that respect, contributing to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 provides strategic opportunities and challenges for our sector.

With this paper we would like to contribute to the discussion on the transition to a climate-neutral Europe. In this paper we describe how our sector already contributes to reduce GHG emission in a sustainable way. The paper then reflects on enablers for our sector to innovate and invest in the transition to climate-neutrality in 2050.

Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking launches

The Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) is the new partnership between the European Union and BIC builds on the success of its predecessor BBI JU.

BIC members have mobilised with our European Commission partners to realise the CBE JU. The circular bio-based industries are key enablers of the green transition towards an innovative, sustainable and competitive society. The work of CBE JU will contribute to the EU’s climate neutrality goal by 2050 and will support the implementation of EU policies working towards this objective. The initiative also underscores the political importance of the bioeconomy in advancing Europe’s competitive edge. By sparking innovation, stimulating collaboration, creating jobs and de-risking investments, CBE JU-funded projects will also boost the local economies across European regions, in particular in rural and coastal areas, and create a shared long-term strategic vision for the sector.

CBE JU is the new BBI JU

You can consult information about at www.cbe.europa.eu. Meanwhile, the BBI JU website remains active for the latest updates on CBE. You can reach the programme office with the email extension is @cbe.europa.eu, instead of the old @bbi.europa.eu but emails will still be received to the old address. If you are beneficiary of a BBI JU-funded project nothing changes for you and you can continue working on your project as before.

How the bioeconomy contributes to the European Green Deal

The bioeconomy, as a catalyst for systemic change, tackles the economic, social and environmental aspects of the Green Deal, seeking new ways of producing and consuming resources while respecting our planetary boundaries and moving away from a linear economy based on extensive use of fossil and mineral resources.

Circular Bio-based Europe ready to fast-track green investments

The Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) applauds the EU Council’s decision to adopt the regulation establishing nine Joint Undertakings under Horizon Europe, including Circular Bio-based Europe (CBE JU). The CBE JU builds on the achievements of the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU).

“United with our European Commission partners, BIC remains committed to building on the successes of the BBI partnership and contributing to the EU’s transformation into an innovative, sustainable and competitive society”, says Mat Quaedvlieg, BIC Chairman and VP Strategic Business Projects, SAPPI.

The decision by the Council demonstrates the importance of the CBE partnership for achieving the European Green Deal in EU Member States and regions. CBE JU will provide opportunities to accelerate bio-based innovation, keep and attract bio-based investments in Europe while enhancing the bioeconomy’s sustainability credentials.

The CBE JU is now set to be established before end 2021, with the first call for proposals launched by the end of the first quarter 2022.
